THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE

The World's Only 14-Lane Suspension Bridge

Spanning the Hudson River, the GWB connects Manhattan/Washington Heights (at 179th Street) and Fort Lee, New Jersey.  Construction began in 1927 and was completed in 1933 at a cost of $59,000,000.  At the time of completion, the GWB was twice the length of any suspension bridge ever built;  today is the 13th longest.  The six lanes of the lower roadway were added in 1962.  The GWB was designed by Othmar Ammann, Swiss-born architect and engineer.  An engineering marvel to this day, the GWB majestically keeps sentinel over the  Palisade Bluffs!
